Scaled scores are calculated using a mathematical formula that considers a variety of factors, including the number and type of exam questions included in a specific version of the exam. Because this combination may vary in different versions of the same examination, scaled scores provide a fair score for each individual based on the version of the exam taken.

What is the audience for the VCDX?
The VMware Certified Design Expert on VMware vSphere 4 (VCDX4) is an advanced certification developed for design architects of VMware enterprise deployments. The VMware Certified Design Expert program measures a candidate's ability to design, implement, document, and test a VMware technology based datacenter infrastructure that meets customer objectives.

In his or her typical job role, the successful VCDX candidate holds primary responsibility for architectural design of a proposed virtual infrastructure, configuration recommendations, implementation planning, integration to third-party components, and deployment validation processes and procedures.

What are the steps to becoming a VCDX4?
For VCDX4 certification requirements please refer to: www.vmware.com/go/vcdx.
  1. Be a VMware Certified Professional on vSphere 4 (VCP4)
  2. Pass the VMware Certified Advanced Professional on vSphere 4 – Datacenter Administration Exam
  3. Pass the VMware Certified Advanced Professional on vSphere 4 – Datacenter Design Exam
  4. Submit a VCDX4 Application that is accepted
  5. Successfully present and defend a VMware Infrastructure Design and Implementation Plan
VMware no longer requires qualifying advanced exams to be taken in a specific sequence. However, all required exams must be passed before the start of the application submission and defense process.

Can I submit a fictitious design?
The design you submit with the VCDX Application must fall into one of these categories:
  • An actual design, generated as part of a design-and-implementation project; OR
  • A partially fictitious design: one based on work done as part of a design-and-implementation project, but that has been modified to demonstrate your mastery of all design areas outlined in the VCDX Blueprint (www.vmware.com/go/vcdx); OR
  • A wholly fictitious design.
Fictitious designs, as well as fictitious components of otherwise actual designs, will be evaluated as if they were part of an actual design-and-implementation project. Fictitious and actual components of a partially fictitious design will be evaluated according to the same standard.

Can I submit my VCDX4 Application before finishing the required exams?
We will not accept your application without both the VCAP4-DCA and VCAP4-DCD exams being passed. However, candidates are encouraged to download the VCDX4 Handbook and Application and start working on preparing the application package as soon as possible.

What are the fees associated with the VCDX certification?
There are two separate fees: An Application Fee of 300 USD is collected when you have submitted a complete application package. If the application is accepted for a defense before the VCDX Panel, a Defense Fee of 900 USD will be due. Fees are subject to change.

Can credits be used to pay for the application and defense fees?
Yes, we can accept VMware Consulting and Training Credits for the VCDX application and defense fees.

Can I apply for more than one VCDX Defense at the same time?
No, a candidate can have only one application submitted at any one time.

Can I have more feedback following my failed attempt at the VCDX certification?
Why is only high-level feedback provided to unsuccessful candidates?

Candidates who achieve the VCDX certification can identify and clearly articulate requirements, map technical specifications to business requirements, and explain design rationale – both in writing and during the defense.

Unsuccessful candidates’ notification letters includes a personalized summary of areas where they scored the lowest. These notifications are not a generic letter; such as might result from a multiple-choice exam with machine-generated score reports. VCDX applications and defenses are graded manually, several separate times, by a team of panelists. The resulting feedback is the culmination of all this manual evaluation and analysis of the candidate’s performance.

Candidates who request additional feedback should consider:
  • The VCDX certification applies to the abilities of the candidate, not the submitted design. The areas identified as those the candidate should consider in “developing and/or demonstrating higher proficiency” often do not refer to areas not (sufficiently) addressed in the design documentation. The areas for improvement provided in the feedback are for the designer and not necessarily for the submitted design.
  • The entire defense proceeding is itself a feedback session: panelists, through their questioning, reveal areas that were not clearly documented, where rationale was unclear, insufficient or absent.
  • Viewing the word count as more important than the value of the feedback provided could result in a lost opportunity to grow as an architect and/or oral test taker.
  • The purpose of VCDX oral testing is to evaluate and validate the individual’s ability to design. Design documentation can include contributions by team members, repurposed templates and best practices. The VCDX certification process is designed to confirm and discern the candidate’s own knowledge and skills.

How can a 3rd party confirm my VCDX status?
A listing of VMware Certified Design eXperts and their biographies can be found at: www.vmware.com/go/vcdxdirectory
[back to top]

How can I obtain a copy of the VCDX logo?
Certified individuals can download the logo from the private Certified Professional Portal.

Why doesn’t VMware publish the pass rate for VCDX Defenses?
Pass-rate information would not be helpful to a candidate preparing to attempt the VCDX certification. The certification is granted to any individual who meets the prerequisites and demonstrates qualifying knowledge and skills. VMware does not have an agenda to fail a certain percentage of candidates.

A primary overall goal of the VCDX program is to advance the field of enterprise design for virtualized infrastructure. This goal will be best served when, someday, every candidate who reaches the VCDX Defense phase succeeds (as measured by our established criteria) and is certified.

Pass rates for all VMware certification exams, including the VCDX application and defense process, are strictly confidential. All VCDX3 candidates were measured against the same criteria throughout the duration of the VCDX3 program. VCDX4’s criteria will be similarly uniform throughout its duration.

For VCDX4, applicants have been provided additional guidance on what capabilities will be measured. Refer to the VCDX4 Design Defense Blueprint, which outlines VCDX4’s objectives. Candidates should use the blueprint in design selection, design documentation, and defense preparation.

Will my defense include questions on topics also covered by prerequisite certifications?
The primary intent of the defense is to allow the candidate to display his or her mastery of the submitted design and virtual infrastructure design in general. However, panelists may probe the candidate on specific technology questions that may or may not also be in the scope of those other certifications. The requirements for VCDX4 include deep technology mastery, and such questions allow the panelists to probe that area of a candidate's skills.
